| Shekhar Kapur explores the relationship between Elizabeth I and the adventurer Sir Walter Raleigh in his latest film “Elizabeth: The Golden Age”.
Machine took on the challenge of adding extra atmosphere and realism to a key sequence in the film which was set on a sailing ship at harbour.
To create a feeling of being at sea on a misty night – subtle, but extensive layering of smoke elements were added by Machine’s compositors, as well as manipulation of the background matte painting.
A large roto team painstakingly separated each shot into many layers of depth – no easy task on moving shots with sailing ship rigging throughout! More than fifty different smoke and mist elements were processed to give exactly the desired speed and feel for each part of the shot, and then composited with subtlety using Shake, to add just the right amount of atmosphere.
Various other effects included removing modern artefacts from period locations, as well as general SFX wire and rig removals and archive footage enhancement.
