Films to See Before You Die (Film Four)

Director: Jason Martin
VFX Supervisors: Steve Street / John Lockwood

Shot on location in Central London, 60 second spot “Films To See Before You Die” follows a young woman walking through a colourful scene, where a seemingly innocent event of putting a spider out of a window spirals out of control, ending in a dramatic climax…

As many of the shots on this stylised piece were unachievable in live action photography, Machine’s supervisors worked with Director Jason Martin to design and create digital solutions.

For the hero shot, Machine’s team of artists photographed and measured the entire low-rise location in detail, enabling a 3D environment with skyscrapers to be rebuilt in the same style using Maya, Renderman and Mental Ray. Aerial footage was used to augment the matte painted view of the street below. Finally a camera move was added to follow the digital paint can as it hurtles to earth, creating a shot reminiscent of “The Hudsucker Proxy”.

Other shots included more falling cans, multiple element splitscreen composites, road sign animations, and bluescreen composites – all finished in Shake.
