Channel 4 Idents (Channel Four)

VFX Supervisors: Steve Street / John Lockwood

Machine was chosen to tackle three key spots from the highly memorable new series of Channel 4’s TV idents, in which key actors and presenters are interviewed to camera with revealing results…

In one spot, we see a meteorite hurtling towards earth – unbeknown to presenter and comedian Russell Brand who is unexpectedly crushed before he has chance to complete his sentence! Using 3D package Maya, a meteor was built and animated along with a fluid effects smoke trail and CG debris. Additional elements and camera shake were combined in Shake to complete the effect of the impact.

In another of the idents, Machine’s team created a talking Llama. Using Maya, a CG muzzle was built to exactly match the real animal’s mouth. Kevin McCloud’s mannerisms were built into the 3D Llama’s rig, enabling it to convincingly take on McCloud’s facial mannerisms. “This is a very sensitive conversion,” the Llama comments in Kevin’s voice, before the real presenter is back in shot feeding it. The spot is highly surreal and certainly memorable!

The third of the idents sees Justin Lee Collins talking to camera as a house catches fire and explodes in the background. Machine combined multiple passes of fire, smoke, pyrotechnics and debris, along with CG smoke to create the effect.
