| To create a unique promo that would reflect a range of dance styles for ITV’s 2008 series “Dancing On Ice”, Machine’s artists worked with Director Oscar Cariss to create three virtual environments as backdrops for choreographed ice skaters.
Starting in a frozen lake environment with ‘Aurora Borealis’ style lighting, John Lockwood supervised skaters (including Torvill and Dean) performing their routines against greenscreen before the team composited them into the backgrounds using Shake. Dean then skates up to the camera, his boot filling the frame, and skates away in a new environment in a seamless transition.
In the second environment, made totally in 3D - a disco full of moving mirrors and flashing lights - the skaters were also shot from a reverse angle to allow ‘true’ reflections to be created using Maya.
For the final transition, the mirrors’ reflections reveal a rooftop and a wide Central London vista. Time-lapse footage shot from the top of the ITV building itself, and a CGI fence surrounding the ice rink, added the final touches. The lighting was adjusted to suit the setting sun, creating a slick and stylish finish to the routine.
