Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Warner Bros.)

VFX Supervisor: Tim Burke
VFX Producer: Emma Norton

It was another magical visit to Hogwarts for Machine, as they created a wide range of shots for Harry’s fifth adventure “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”.

Various composites, a CG character, and other effects were created – including magical broom and wand effects, shirts obediently tucking themselves in, mirrors reflecting the past, and breathing life into a scale model of Hogwarts.

As part of Professor Umbridge’s toolkit, Machine was asked to create and animate a CG measuring tape, that had an entirely separate personality of its own! Built using Maya and Renderman, the tape uncoils itself from it’s case to measure the unsuspecting conductor, and then wiggles it’s way back inside.

A number of versions of the tape were created throughout the process to develop it’s character and to get the most convincing motion. The lighting was aided by 360° digital stills which captured the true on-set lighting, allowing a seamless composite in Shake.

In another of Machine’s shots, characters line up in an ordinary suburban street, and magically call their broomsticks into their waiting hands.
